Light painting
In this exercise we were tasked with a photographic technique called light painting. Light painting is where the camera shutter stays open for a longer period of time (5-30 seconds) and lets light in.  
Light painting is done in dark areas so that the photo sensor can sense the light, capture it and put it on the frame. With light painting you can draw anything so this makes it a new art form. Here are some professional examples and then my examples of light painting.

these photos have been taken in a dark room and/or dim lit outdoors. For more creative light paintings dim lit outdoors is probably best because you can see the person as well as the light creation
